The film deals with the story of 1948, when an American court in occupied Germany tried four Nazi judges for serious war crimes during this period. Chief Justice Haywood began hearing more evidence and testimonies from the main suspect, Ernst Janning and his lawyer, Hans Rolf, and the widow of the Nazi general, the exemplary US Army chief and reluctant witness, Irene Wallner, to decide a case that had sparked much controversy.
